Signed "HWScott" lower right, inscribed "Western Stock" and with other inscriptions crossed out on the reverse, inscribed "No. 10" in red on the stretcher, inscribed "In Trouble" in pencil on the back of the frame, with a gummed label inscribed "Western Story" affixed to the back of the frame.
Oil on canvas, 30 x 21 in. (76.0 x 53.2 cm), framed.
Condition: Retouch, small horizontal slit and pinhole-sized puncture to upper right quadrant, scattered small paint losses, craquelure with areas of lifting, varnish discoloration, surface grime.

N.B. The lot is accompanied by a framed cover of Western Story Magazine featuring this work and bearing the date of February 5, 1944. Published by Street & Smith from 1919 to 1949, Western Story was the first of many pulp fiction magazines devoted to stories of the American West.

Condition: Framed dimensions are 33 1/2 x 24 5/8 x 1 1/4 inches.
