Northwestern Europe, England, Weymouth, Lower Oxfordian / Kimmeridgian Formation, Late Jurassic, ca. 163.5 to 157.3 million years ago. A stunning fossil from a carnivorous fish, Thrissops, within a large slate matrix that also contains ammonites! The fish is orientated in a curved position, with a downward pointed head and extended fins. The forked tail extends off the edge of the matrix, these fins would have enabled great bursts of speed when hunting smaller fish. The bones and soft tissue are a deeper gray-brown hue, contrasting with the blue-gray matrix. The inclusion of the ammonites creates a nice aquarium or sea floor scene from this prehistoric ocean. This particular fossil was purportedly one of the largest and most complete specimens of this fish discovered in the Kimmeridge formation when originally purchased 2008.
