L’opera è attribuita ad Ammonio di Alessandria che nel II secolo propose una sinossi dei Vangeli individuandone i brani paralleli: mise a punto un’armonia, o consonanza, dei quattro Vangeli, prendendo per base il Vangelo di Matteo e integrando le sezioni mancanti con brani presi dagli altri vangeli. Il testo che ci è pervenuto è la versione latina che ne fece il Vescovo di Capua Vittore nel V secolo: la consultazione è facilitata dalle referenze ai margini. Questa edizione è magnificamente illustrata con un Frontespizio architettonico con Cleopatra alla base e diverse figure allegoriche, da una marca editoriale a piena pagina raffigurante San Gerolamo nello studio seduto di fronte al leone; infine due grandi iniziali, una con il ritratto di San Marco, l’altra con San Giovanni in estasi insieme all’aquila.

Beautiful and rare edition. The work is attributed to Ammonium of Alexandria which, in the second century, proposed a synopsis of the Gospels identifying the parallel tracks: devised harmony, or consonance, of the four Gospels, taking as a basis the Gospel of Matthew and integrating the missing sections with passages taken from the other Gospels. The text that has survived is the Latin version that made the Bishop of Capua Vittore in the fifth century: the consultation is facilitated by references on the margins. This edition is beautifully illustrated with an architectural title-page with Cleopatra at the base and several allegorical figures, with a full-page printer's mark depicting St. Jerome in his study sitting in front of the lion; finally two large initials, the first with the portrait of St. Mark, the other with San Giovanni in ecstasy with the eagle.
