**First Time At Auction**
Ancient Central Asia, Indus Valley, Mehrgarh period, ca. 3500 to 2800 BCE. An intriguing standing female terracotta figure, hand-built with characteristically stylized features. The bird-faced figure presents with dramatically recessed eye sockets and a beak-like nose above a series of concentric necklaces and has lappets from her vertically striped headdress draped atop her shoulders. She holds her narrow arms to either side of her corseted waist and stands atop delineated legs with bangles adorning her ankles. Bird-faced figurines like this example are found throughout the region and perhaps represent goddesses, matriarchs, or a religious worshipper. Size: 2.2" W x 5.125" H (5.6 cm x 13 cm); 5.5" H (14 cm) on included custom stand.

Condition
Repaired from a few large pieces, with restoration to left leg and left arm, resurfacing and overpainting along new material and break lines. Light encrustations, softening to finer details, and fading to pigment. Nice earthen deposits throughout.
