Description
**First Time At Auction**
Native American, Midwestern United States, Missouri, Ferry and Calloway Counties, Eastern Woodland, early to late Archaic period, ca. 8000 to 1000 BCE. A fine trio of spear points, all carefully hand-knapped from stone chert in mottled hues of cream, vanilla, almond, honey, butterscotch, smoke, and ash gray. Each of the lovely weapons displays a convex base, an expanding stem, barbed shoulders, and corner notches. Classified as a Dovetail point, the largest of the 3 presents an outward recurvate blade with a flared shoulder edge and a biconvex cross section formed from horizontal transverse flaking with some random flaking near the bottom. Similarly, the mid-size point also exhibits a horizontal transverse flaking pattern, however it features a flattened cross section and an excurvate blade with a rounded shoulder edge. Last, the most petite weapon showcases a Hardin Knobbed form with an incurvate blade, a flared shoulder edge, a rhomboid cross section, and a collateral flaking pattern. Size of largest: 1.4" W x 6.5" H (3.6 cm x 16.5 cm)
Provenance: private Kansas City, Missouri, USA collection, ex-John Townsend collection, formed in the 1970's and earlier
