Description
Kidder (Edward) E. Kidder's Receipts of Pastry and Cookery for the Use of His Scholars. Who Teaches at His School in Queen Street near St. Thomas Apostles, on Mondays, Tuesdays & Wednesdays, in the Afternoon. Also on Thursdays, Fridays & Saturdays, in the Afternoon, at His School next to Furnivals Inn in Holborn. Ladies may be taught at their own houses, engraved throughout on rectos only, portrait frontispiece of Kidder in a wig by Robert Sheppard, title, 40 ff. of receipts, a f. of bills of fare and an index f. (totalling 42 text ff.), 8 plates of pies and tarts, of which 3 folding, some foxing and staining, spotting, lightly browned, contemporary panelled calf, spine in compartments, upper joint split, but holding, lower joint starting, edges worn, little stained, rubbed, [Bitting pp.258-259; Cagle 793; Maclean p.82-84; Oxford p.71 (earlier issue); Simon BG 907 (earlier issue); Vicaire 475], 8vo, [London], no printer, [c.1720-1725].
⁂ Second issue, with the Queen Street address (earlier issue with 'St. Martins le grand'); additional text added to leaves F2 and H1 resulting in the final line of text on both leaves being on the same level as the alphabetical numbering system; a different index leaf (without 'fins' at foot and with the alphabetical numbering system to the inner margin); with leaf K2; and with plate of 'Lamb pastey' and 'Wilde Boar Pye'. The title page is essentially an advertisement for this pastry chef's cookery school.
Provenance: 'Susanna Searle. April ye 20. 1744' (ink inscription to loose front free endpaper).
