Description
A splendid German silver-mounted Nautilus cup, 19th centurySilver. Domed, hollow base with a broad, flaring rim. The edge adorned with dotted oval cartouches, surrounded by engraved tendrils. The base with a gadrooned boss. Fancifully wrought shaft with a hippocamp in silver edged sea spray. A tree trunk growing out of its back. The shell embellished on both sides with engraved and blackened figurative décor, including a sea god (Poseidon). Press-in lid in the shape of a hoisted sail. The sail engraved "Pelikan van Dunkerke". A fully sculptured putto with bellows, filling the sail with wind, as finial on the shell. Hallmarked with 13 lot on the base. Dimensions 53 x 19 x 14 cm, total weight 1,275 kg.Condition: II
