**First Time At Auction**
Pre-Columbian, Panama, Cocle, ca. 600 to 900 CE. An attractive pottery plate hand-painted with intricate zoomorphic and geometric decoration in hues of black and red on a creamy beige ground. The vessel displays a planar base and slanted walls that rise to a broad rim above a shallow basin. The interior is divided into quadrants, each adorned with a double-headed, avian-esque creature as well as lattice, linear, and dotted designs all surrounded by a border of striated and undulating bands. Petite vertical dashes line the top of the rim, while its exterior boasts a horizontal register of ocular motifs. The underside of the dish colorfully striped. Size: 7.8" Diameter x 1.3" H (19.8 cm x 3.3 cm)
Provenance: ex-Nancy and Dr. E.F. Simpson collection, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired from 1970 to 2000
