JAMES DUANE (1733-1797). Mayor of New York City (1784-1789) and a Signer of the Articles of Confederation; Delegate Member of First Continental Congress.
July 16, 1784-Dated, Original Manuscript Document Signed, "Jas Duane, Mayor" as Mayor of New York City, New York, measuring 12" x 8", Very Fine. Being an order of the City of New York Common Council, authorizing payment to the estate of Stephen Terhune for glazing work approved April 19, 1776 and additional work done after that date. Countersigned by Robert Benson as Clerk of the Common Council. Choice Handmade rag period paper, folds, well written with a huge signature.
JAMES DUANE (1733-1797) was a Patriot and leader of New York during the American Revolutionary War. He was a Delegate to the Continental Congress, and would have actually signed the Declaration of Independence, but for he was also serving at that time at the New York State Constitutional Convention 1776-1777. He later Signed the Articles of Confederation, and was Mayor of New York City 1784-1789.
