February 23, 1910-Dated, Partially-Printed Document, Bank Check measuring 2-5/8" x 6.5", Signed "Simon Lake" as the Payor of $10 to B.F. Cooney, drawn on the City National Bank of Bridgeport, CT, Choice Extremely Fine. Punch-cancelled "PAID" at center. Lake's signature is in a pale brown ink and measures 2.5" across. Simon Lake was an American mechanical engineer and naval architect who obtained over two hundred patents for advances in naval design. He competed with John Holland to build the first submarines for the United States Navy. He was inspired by Jules Verne's "20,000 Leagues Under The Sea" and brought his visions to life.
Simon Lake (September 4, 1866 - June 23, 1945) was a Quaker American mechanical engineer and naval architect who obtained over two hundred patents for advances in naval design and competed with John Philip Holland to build the first submarines for the United States Navy. He became known as the "Gentle Genius" and is considered the "Father of the Modern Submarine".
