Day" on the signature line; Day has also engrossed the remainder of the check, directing clerks of the Bank of G.D. Harter & Bro. to pay $75 to "self." May 4, 1876. [Canton, Ohio.] The check is affixed with a cancelled revenue stamp at upper left and bears the expected clerical cancellation marks. The sight size of the check is 7" x 2.75" while the overall size of the mat is 9.875" x 15.25."

[Washington, D.C.] On a leaf of stationery embossed with "Supreme Court of the United States / Washington, D.C." letterhead. Also included is the original transmittal envelope partly addressed in Douglas's hand to his correspondent (the first line), and featuring Douglas's initials above the Supreme Court return address.
