1743 Pay Order Signed "Thomas Hunt" at Boston Endorsed by "Jacob Wendell" the Great Grandfather of Oliver Wendell Holmes and Merchant / Banker
June 22, 1743-Dated Colonial Era, Autograph Document Signed, "Thomas Hunt," Boston, Choice Very Fine.
This original Manuscript Document is dated 1743 at Boston, where Thomas Hunt has signed a receipt of payment from Obadiah Dickinson, for his payment to the Boston merchants, Jacob, John and Jacob (Jr.) Wendell, Choice Very Fine. Signed at lower right by Hunt. Document measures about 7" x 2.25" tipped with museum-quality edge mounting to a larger 7.5" x 10.75" sheet for display. Some light marginal age toning, else beautifully written boldly signed and in very nice condition. Endorsed on the blank reverse: "Jacob & Jno. Wendell - Reced in full June 1743". Jacob Wendell was a wealthy merchant, and colonel of the Boston Regiment in 1745; afterwards a councillor, and a director in the first banking institution in the province. His son Oliver, also a leading Bostonian, was the Grandfather of Oliver Wendell Holmes, the only "autocrat" who has ever flourished in Boston. Exceedingly rare.
