Description
EPHEMERA: "DOCUMENTS RELATING TO The Presidential Election in the Year 1801", published by Mifflin and Parry, Printers, in Philadelphia, 1831, this booklet contains a refutation of two passages written by Thomas Jefferson that allegedly asperse the character of the late James A. Bayard of Delaware, 14 pp., plus 1 blank leaf at the end, removed from a bound volume, the final blank leaf has been clipped at the top edge, the final text leaf (page 13/14) has a clean tear, not affecting any text. [NOTE: The U.S. Presidential Election of 1801 was a landmark contest that resulted in an Electoral College tie between Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr, despite the fact that Burr was running as Jefferson's Vice-Presidential candidate. After 35 ballots in the House of Representatives, James A. Bayard of Delaware is considered instrumental in breaking the deadlock, ultimately leading to Jefferson's election as the 3rd U.S. President. This scarce pamphlet, published 30 years after the election, seeks to defend Bayard's reputation against Jefferson's alleged written attacks. An interesting piece of early American political history and controversy.]
