1763 French & Indian War Connecticut Pay Document in "bills of the Late Emissions" for Boarding a Jailed Prisoner
October 6th, 1763-Dated French and Indian War, Manuscript Document for Payment Signed, "Geo(rge) Pitkin" as Clerk, New London (Connecticut), Choice Very Fine.
Original Manuscript Document is both Handwritten and Signed by "Geo(rge) Pitkin, Clerk" being the future Colonel in the American Revolution. Written in rich crisp brown ink on clean laid paper and having choice eye appeal. It measures 3.5" x 8" with docket on its blank reverse, "X" manuscript cancel at the clerks last name. This reads, in full:
"To Joseph Talcott Esquire Treasurer Etc. --- Sir, --- please to pay Joseph Peck goaler (jailer) in Norwich in ye County of New London the sum of five pounds three shillings and six pence in bills of the Late Emissions (the current issue of Colonial paper money) for boarding John Knight a prisoner in said goal (prison) 23 weeks at 4/6 per week - dated New London October 6th, 1763 - By order of Court -- (Signed) George Pitkin Clerk."
Docket on reverse, plus; Signed by Joseph Peck and Thomas Phelps. Joseph Talcott Esquire Treasurer was the 10th Treasurer of the Colony of Connecticut from 1756 to 1769.
