Description
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, Chinesco type, Protoclassic Period, ca. 100 BCE to 250 CE. A hand-built pottery female Chinesco figure standing atop delineated legs with dramatically arched feet. The tan-hued woman presents wearing a short loincloth, holding both arms to her womb, and with perky breasts displayed beneath a red-painted neckline. Her enlarged, heart-shaped head exhibits a petite nose, flush ears adorned with 'shells,' and an intended brow, all with brown pigment creating stripes across her face. Size: 1.8" W x 4.9" H (4.6 cm x 12.4 cm); 6.2" H (15.7 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: ex-private collection of the late Father Bader, University of St. Thomas, Houston, Texas, USA; exhibited in the University of St. Thomas Art Gallery, acquired prior to 2000

Condition
Minor abrasions and nicks to limbs, body, and head, with light encrustations, and fading to painted facial details and pigment in scattered areas, otherwise intact and very good. Nice remains of pigment throughout.
