Description
U.S. Grant Cold Harbor Cabinet Card Showing Black Soldiers

A cabinet card mounted with a sepia-colored albumen photograph entitled "General Grant in Camp - Army of the Potomac - 1864." Originally photographed by Mathew Brady or one of his workshops at City Point, Virginia, ca. June 12, 1864. The cabinet card is undated but was probably produced after 1870. Expected superficial wear to the photo surface, and even toning to the card. Minor blunting to the corners, else near fine. 6.5" x 4.25."

The photograph shows Union General Ulysses S. Grant (1822-1885) at Army of the Potomac camp headquarters in City Point, Virginia around the time of the disastrous conclusion of the Battle of Cold Harbor. The commander is surrounded by staff officers. Several onlookers near the fringes can be seen watching the photography shoot with interest; one of these, on the right, appears to be a black Union soldier, while two men on the left, not apparently in uniform, may have served in auxiliary military roles. U.S. Grant was a well-known champion of black enlistment.

Individuals in the photograph include, from left to right: Frederick Tracy Dent (U.S. Grant's brother-in-law); John A. Rawlins; William Duff; Adam Badeau; Ulysses S. Grant; Peter Todd Hudson; Theodore S. Bowers; John G. Barnard; unidentified; Ely Parker, military secretary and grandnephew of Red Jacket; William M. Dunn; Orville E. Babcock; Frederick R. Munther.

Part of U.S. Grant's Overland Campaign, the Battle of Cold Harbor was actually a series of Union frontal attacks launched against Confederate lines near Mechanicsville, Virginia between May 31-June 12, 1864. This was a particularly busy and bloody period of the Civil War, and Cold Harbor was one of its costliest battles, with approximately 18,000 casualties on both sides. The Battle of Cold Harbor was part of a larger effort to sever enemy supply lines and encircle the Confederate capital at Richmond. Yet Grant himself later regretted the battle, and most historians today agree it was a futile engagement.
