Description
Advice on Selling Slaves to Pay Debts "keep the best force for your own use..."
2pp of a bifolium, measuring 7.75" x 9.75", Fredericksburg, dated December 28, 1825. Signed "Charles Wellford" and addressed to Mrs. Elizabeth Stiff. Charles provides comfort and advice to Mrs. Stiff regarding her debts and the sale of several of her slaves. Reading in part: "…I hasten to give my advice as it relates to the sale of the servants if it is not too late…In selecting the servants to be sold you had better retain the two men Carter & Solomon as they are now of more service than any others you have. Carter I would particularly advise you to keep as he is honest & faithful. I think Esther & her children would probably pay the amount now required but think you had better take the advice of some person who knows better than I possibly can at so great a distance from you. From what I can learn Esther is not a good servant & would rather dispose of her if a judge would say she & her children would pay the amount, keep the best force for your own use…" The letter has flattened mail folds, light soiling & toning on verso. Minor tearing from the wax seal being broken. Minor edge separations. Overall very good.
