Slave Owner Receives Pay for his Slave Enlisted in the Union Army

CIVIL WAR. Two Partly Printed Documents Signed regarding former slave Charles Hargis, who enlisted in the Regiment United States Colored Troops, Co. G.  The first document, 7.5" x 9.75", is headed "Office of Board of Claims For Slaves Enlisted in U.S. Service", and certifies that Ann Hargis, of Worcester County, Maryland, has filed a "valid Deed of Manumission and Release of Service of Charles Hargis, a man of African descent..."  It is signed and sealed by the Clerk to Board of Claims, in addition to being signed by Ann Hargis.  Payment in the amount of $100 has been documented with a 2-cent revenue stamp affixed to the bottom of the document.

The second document, 8.5" x 14", is a "Proof of Ownership" in which Ann Hargis swears that she was the owner of Charles Hargis at the time of his enlistment. Three 2-cent revenue stamps are affixed to the left edge, a 5-cent revenue stamp is affixed at bottom.

General Order No. 329, War Department 1863, allowed former owners to collect money for former slaves who enlisted before April 1, 1864.
