Description

Edward Rutledge, Youngest Declaration Signer, Superb DS

1p partially-printed, measuring 12.75" x 8.25", Charleston, dated March 1, 1780. Signed and endorsed on verso "Ed: Rutledge." The document is for the South Carolina legal case of James Gregorie vs. John Bowman, with Gregorie accusing Bowman of trespass and for "certain promises and assumptions by the said John Bowman to the said James Gregorie made and not performed, to the Damage of Five Thousand Pounds Sterling Money…" A paper and red wax seal has been adhered at the upper left corner. Rutledge has added to his signature the endorsement "I appear for the Deft. in this Action." With flattened folds and toning at the folds. Slightly rough and bumped edges. Minor foxing throughout. Boldly signed.

Edward Rutledge (1749-1800) was born in Charleston, South Carolina, the son of a physician. He studied law in London at the Inns of Court and gained admission to the English bar in 1772. Returning to Charleston to practice law, Rutledge set up a successful law practice with Charles Cotesworth Pinckney. When the American Revolution broke out, Edward Rutledge and his brother John Rutledge represented South Carolina in the Continental Congress. At age 26, he was the youngest delegate to sign the Declaration of Independence. He returned to South Carolina in November 1776 and served as a captain of the artillery in the militia. Just two months after signing this document, Rutledge was captured during the Siege of Charleston and was only released in a prisoner exchange in July 1781.
