Founded in 1812, the Ordnance Branch is one of the oldest branches of the U.S. Army, although the duties and responsibilities of the profession date back to the colonial era. The Ordnance Department was responsible for managing the army's supply of weapons -- cannons, muskets, swords, pistols, ammunition, and more. During the Civil War, the department was called upon to arm and equip an army of unprecedented size. To achieve this, the Ordnance Department increased its civilian staff from 1,000 to 9,000 by the end of the war.
