Description
Confederate Enlistment Document South Carolina Army
CIVIL WAR. Printed Document, 1p, 7.75" x 9.625". The enlistment form has not been filled out, although an unknown hand has added “for three years or” to the term of service. Folds; scattered tears with paper loss; soiling; toning; else, very good plus condition.
The form would have been completed in manuscript with the recruit's town and state of birth, age, date of enlistment, and signature swearing to bear allegiance to the State of South Carolina and the Confederate States.
Centered within the “Confederate States of America / State of South Carolina” letterhead is an oval image of a tall palmetto tree and an oak tree, fallen and broken. This scene represents the 1776 battle fought between defenders of the unfinished fort on Sullivan's Island and the British Fleet. The standing palmetto represents the victorious defenders, and the fallen oak is the British Fleet.
South Carolina was the first state to secede from the Union in December 1860. Following suit, ten other Southern states joined South Carolina to form the Confederate States of America. The firing on Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor on April 12, 1861 is generally recognized as the first military engagement of the war. Four years later, after General William T. Sherman’s troops had burned their way through the state, the Confederacy surrendered. Some 60,000 South Carolinians had gone to war; nearly one-fourth of them never returned.
