Sam Newton (American/Florida, b. 1948) oil on board waterscape depicting a river at sunset with the sun partially visible below a moss laden tree and multicolor sky, a pier to the center, and wide tree-lined road in the foreground. Signed "S. Newton" lower right. White weathered painted wood frame. Prior owner information (John B. George) written en verso. Sight: 23 1/2" H x 35 1/8" W. Framed: 26 3/8" H x 38 1/4" W. Biography: Sam Newton was one of the Florida African-American painters known as the Highwaymen, which included Sam's brother Harold Newton, James Gibson, Robert Butler, and Alfred Hair. These mostly itinerant artists were influenced by Albert E Backus, the "dean of Florida landscape painting", and often sold their works from the trunks of their cars.

Condition
Overall good condition. Some bowing to board, evident en verso along with foxing along the lower board. Areas of scattered paint exfoliation to dark green paint, mostly to trees, one small pinprick area of exfoliation upper right corner. Frame with minor abrasions to the corners.
