A George II sterling silver half-pint mug, London circa 1750 maker and date obscured
Of plain baluster form upon a spreading foot, the leaf capped double C scroll handle. Engraved to the front with a contemporaneous crest of a saracen's head, couped at the breast, ducally crowned, below an Earl’s coronet. Marked to the rim.
Height – 10.5 cm / 4.15 inches
Weight – 224 grams / 7.2 ozt
The crest is for Bertie, as borne by The Earls of Abingdon (est. 1682)
Probably for Willoughby Bertie, 3rd Earl of Abingdon (1692 – 1760), who inherited the earldom upon the death of his uncle Montagu Venables-Bertie, 2nd Earl of Abingdon. (1673-1743).
