白玉質，細潤瑩白，清透光澤，局部有灰白色鈣化及褐色沁。圓雕羊形呈伏臥狀，圓眼，眼瞼刻劃清晰細膩，平視前方，長吻，雙角彎曲盤於頭後方兩側，神態篤定安詳。短頸，胸前鼓起，四肢收於腹下，蹄趾明顯，頭頂、兩頰、胸前、脊背及腿部等處以細陰線飾毛髮，身姿飽滿修長，小尾粗短而微翹。本件臥羊造形寫實，拋光平滑細膩，渾圓飽滿，姿態端莊，玲瓏精巧。
羊，在中國傳統文化中，為吉祥、美好、善良的象徵，西漢大儒董仲舒：「羊，祥也，故吉禮用之。」古器物銘文中「吉祥」多作「吉羊」；羊也是講禮儀、遵道德的化身，《詩．小雅．無羊》：「羔羊，鵲巢之國也，召南之政，在位皆儉節正直，德如羔羊也」。以羊為題材一直是歷代推崇的動物造形玉雕。
玉羊之作，在商周時期已出現；春秋戰國時期出現仿生圓雕；漢代開始趨向寫實主義的生活氣息；隋唐時期向世俗化發展，羊的形象逐漸活潑生動，雕刻圓潤細膩。本品承襲漢代風格，如北京故宮博物院庋藏漢〈玉臥羊〉可資參考。拍場相似之例可參見拍賣於北京保利2019年6月5日，編號5599，元〈青白玉臥羊〉，與本件玉羊皆逼真寫實，肌肉起伏明顯清晰，整體刀法紋絲不亂，同時強調細部刻劃，雕琢精美，碾磨光潤，體現出羊的圓潤造形和靜態之美。
