本作以絹本創作，色調柔麗細緻。畫面中遠山雄偉，苔點密布，近景蒼松矗立，松幹粗壯挺拔，令人望之儼然。松針細緻繁密，顯露勃勃生機。樹下高士頭戴官帽，著長衫，身旁雙馬相伴。駿馬低首，眼神炯炯，鬃毛柔順披覆，腰背滾圓，四肢粗壯，步履從容安逸。整體用筆精到，墨線勾勒後再施以暈染，動物造形生動準確，展現藝術家深厚筆墨功力。
溥儒，原名愛新覺羅．溥儒，初字仲衡，改字心畬，號羲皇上人、西山逸士。清宗室，為清恭親王奕訢之孫。篤嗜詩文、書畫，皆有成就。畫工山水、兼擅人物、花卉及書法，與張大千有「南張北溥」之譽。溥儒自幼學習皇家騎射，長期接觸觀察，對馬之形體與神態能精確掌握，畫風細膩典雅，筆墨精妙。
