Catalogue Note: Sidney Risley first appears in Norwich circa 1836. It is believed Mr. Risley arrived in the area from East Hartford, CT. The 1850 census lists two potters living in the Risley household including Sidney (age 35) and Jonathan Tarbox (age 62). The census also records John McPierson (age 23), as a laborer residing in the home. By 1860, Tarbox and McPierson are no longer listed as residing within the household, however, Sidney continues to be listed as "potter", in addition to his now 17-year-old son, George. Ten years later, younger son William, is listed as helping his father in the pottery, in addition to his older brother George, who now has his own separate household.
