Description
AFTER THE ANTIQUE, A BRONZE FIGURE OF ARISTIDES FRENCH, LATE 19TH CENTURY Signed to the cast F. BARBEDIENNE FONDEUR, and impressed A. Collas pastille, numbered to underside 56 44 41.2cm high, base 13.8cm wideProvenance: Property from the Kingshott CollectionA similar but larger example of this work by Barbedienne is in The Royal Collection, a gift from Queen Victoria to Price Albert, 24th December 1848. This figure has often been catalogued as 'a senator'- or 'Socrates' but it would seem more likely that the attribution to the Athenian stateman Aristides- the best and most honourable man in Athens- would seem to be correct. And a fitting Christmas present for Queen Victoria to have given.
