Description
Peter Lenzo (living & working primarily in Columbia, SC), now is based in Chicago and still active as a potter. He began working w/ clay at age 10. At age 15, he was given a potter’s wheel and one year later dropped out of a traditional HS. Lenzo attended an alternative program and throughout continued to take pottery classes. When Peter was 22 he involved in a serious biking accident that resulted in chronic seizures. From 1991-2001, Lenzo's work transitioned from resembling stylized traditional Southern face jugs to more realistic self-portraits. Some of the face jugs are covered with found objects including shards stuck into the faces and very expressive & entropic. And this was inspired in part by his young son at the time circa 2001 when his son put some of his toys into the clay body. This face jug has one of those baby/child toys stuck to its head. And is earlier 2000's. Lenzo signed the face on the back & just w/ last name on base. There is an inscription & hard to read likely date that is filled in w/ glaze. Stands 11.5" tall.
