Metchnikoff and Ehrlich shared the 1908 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discovering the major types and functions of phagocytes and the types of blood leukocytes respectively. Their work led to discovering how to generate and use antibodies to protect against bacterial toxins. We have been unable to trace any other works inscribed by either to the other. The inscription here reads: "Herrn Professor, Dr Ehrlich, hochachtungsvoll in freundlicher Erinnerung des Verfassers."
