Trommeln wurden anlässlich sozialer Anlässe und religiösen Ritualen von Würdenträgern und Mitgliedern der Geheimgesellschaften gespielt.

Mehrbeinige Standtrommeln wie die vorliegende kamen meist in Begleitung von Xylophonen, Hörnern, Trompeten und Schellenringen, die an den Hand- oder Fussgelenken getragen wurden, zum Einsatz.

Die im Halbrelief geschnitzten figürlichen Verzierungen stammen aus der Senufo-Mythologie.
