SYDNEY DOWSE (1918 – 2008) Royal Air Force pilot who became a prisoner of war and survived The Great Escape during the Second World War. On 24 March 1944, he took part in The Great Escape through tunnel 'Harry', escaping with Flt Lt Stanislaw 'Danny' Krol. Dowse and Krol traveled mainly by foot towards the Polish border, but were recaptured just inside Germany on 6 April 1944. They were among the last escapers to be re-captured. Taken to the local Gestapo headquarters, they were interrogated before being separated. Dowse was sent to Sachsenhausen concentration camp. Stanislaw 'Danny' Krol was among the 50 recaptured officers to be executed. S.P. 8 x 11.5 in. b/w, a copy of a wartime image of Dowse beside his aircraft, signed in the bottom margin. Fine.
