Description

A truly historical work of art, depicting the Union Armies during 1862, '3, '4, '5. Contains thirty-five plates drawn by Edwin Forbes, c. 1876. Scarce first edition of one of the finest graphic representations of the American Civil War.

Prints have slight toning and foxing. Loose binding. Five plates are missing of the original forty.

From the estate and lifelong collection of William Garrett Hodges (1946-2014). Hodges was a Virginia-based dealer of fine arts, with specialization in prints and rare books, having collected for decades. He supplied and consulted various groups on antiquities throughout his career, including the White House, the Vice President's residence, the FBI, and multiple film and television series.
