Description
(1827 - 1892) Confederate major general who led a regiment at the Seven days' and Fredericksburg, and took over Pender's command at Gettysburg where he was severely wounded. War-date A.L.S. 2pp. 8vo., [n.p., n.d. but undoubtedly 1861] to North Carolina Gov. HENRY T. CLARK (1808-1874), who served from July 7, 1861 to Sep. 8, 1862. A letter of recommendation reading in part: '...You will by virtue of your position be [making] if the Convention has not conferred the power of appointments in reference to the appointments for the new companies raised to make up the quota. Permit me, as a friend, and one who sincerely desires to see efficient officers, to recommend the names of two of your countrymen, Capt. Joseph Hyman and Dr. Fuqua. I have had a good opportunity of knowing them, and take pleasure in saying that they are gentlemen of high character, of good military requirements, and their company by its thorough discipline and good training will prove all I have said. In a word, they are fully entitled to your confidence and deserve to be noticed by the State...' Expertly inset and in fine condition.
