Description
(1808 - 1889) President of the Confederacy who led his armies beyond the surrender at Appomattox. Good association A.L.S. as U.S. Senator from Mississippi, 1p. 4to., Washington, Mar. 11, 1848 to Secretary of the Navy JOHN Y. MASON (1799-1859). Davis asks that Robert W. Mitchell of Mississippi be placed on the list of applicants for a Midshipman's Warrant: '...He is the son of Genl. G[uilford]. D[udley]. Mitchell a distinguished citizen of our state and is strongly recommended my Chancellor Stephen Sacke[?]...' Small split in top margin, else near fine. The younger Mitchell apparently never received his commission - all the better. He would serve as a major and surgeon in Vaughan's Brigade during the Civil War, and in 1878 was crucial in saving Memphis from an outbreak of yellow fever. His father, General Mitchell, served through the Civil War with the Mississippi State Militia.
