Item Details
Description
(1858 - 1919) Twenty-sixth President of the United States who started the Panama Canal, settled the Russo-Japanese War, broke up Standard Oil, and encouraged conservation. T.L.S. 'Theodore Roosevelt', 1p. 4to., Oyster Bay, Dec. 23, 1898, to Gen. HOWARD CARROLL, a New York militia officer and inspector of troops during the Spanish-American War. He was the son of Col. Howard Carroll of the 105th New York Vols. who was killed at Antietam in 1862. Newly-elected New York Gov. Roosevelt responds to Carroll, who apparently seeks a promotion in the state's national guard. In part: '...Won't you let that brevet matter rest until I can have a consultation with the Major-General. I do not want to make a precedent about the Staff but if I can give you the brevet I certainly shall...' Toned a bit at the bottom, with a few marginal chips thereat, else very good. Sold with a small grouping of material related to Carroll's military service, including invitation 'To The Artillery Officers of the State of New York, A Dinner by General Howard Carroll' New York, February 15, 1896; War Department Army Transport Service Sept. 18, 1899 letter mentioning USS MISSOURI, how it is outfitted, and expectations of sending her to Manila soon; New York Special Orders for Carroll for a tour of inspection of volunteers, June 17, 1898; a letter of introduction to the Commanding General Camp Thomas, Chickamauga, June 17, 1898; Department of State letter of introduction; and a T.L.S., 1913 from New York Mayor WILLIAM J. GAYNOR thanking Carroll for dinner.
