Description
German States, Nurnberg. 1753 Medal Struck in celebration of the birthday of Karl Wilhelm Friedrich, Margrave of the Principality of Ansbach (White Metal, 55mm, 52.2 grams). The obverse shows a splendid house with gardens, a fountain, and tents erected in anticipation of a fireworks display. The Margrave was well known for his extravagant lifestyle, and a massive birthday fireworks display seems completely consistent with his spending habits. He routinely spent 10% of the state budget on hunting, and left his heir with a debt of 2.3 million Thalers. The margrave died of a stroke some four years after the minting of this medal, and clearly could not take any of his wealth with him to the grave. A lovely Mint State example with considerable semi-reflective vibrance. Historically significant and clearly QUITE RARE as this is the only example for which we can find any past auction records. Est. $500.
