Title: Archive of approximately 340 snapshot photographs taken by a lineman on the massive infrastructure project laying power lines from southern California north into Oregon
Place Published: California
Publisher:
Date Published: c.1946-1955
Description:
Gelatin silver photographs. Approx. 9x13 cm (3½x5¼"), loose.
Amazing photographic record of one of the key industrial projects of post-war California, tying together the power grids of northern and southern California and into the Pacific Northwest. The photographer was hired as a lineman with the Pacific Gas & Electric Company soon after his discharge from the U.S. Marines, having been wounded at the Battle of Iwo Jima. His wounds did not hold him down, and many of the photographs are taken from the massive towers high above the ground or the turbulent waters of the Carquinez Strait. Also included is a group photograph (originally 8x19½", now split in two) of some 59 employees of the PG&E Concord Dist. East Bay Div., taken on Feb. 24, 1949. There is a list identifying the employees, of whom Tom Sherman was one. A unique and historically valuable collection, which has remained in the Sherman family and is now consigned by a member.
