Description
Ploesti Romania – Operation Tidal Wave. On August 1, 1943, after a journey of 1200 miles from Benghazi, Libya, an air armada of 178 B-24 Liberators attacked: the massive oil refinery complex at Ploesti, Romania. Under the code-name Operation Tidal Wave, the mission combined five bomb groups from the Eighth and Ninth Air Forces. Tidal Wave completely broke with established US Army Air Forces policy. Instead of the traditional high-altitude, precision bombing, the B-24s would drop their bombs from 200—800 feet in the air. With the Liberators coming in so low and having the element of surprise. 10” x 8” black and white photograph of the nose of Northern Star, an aircraft that participated in the raid, signed by three crew members: Glen W. Underwood “Lt. Glen W. Underwood Pilot ‘Northern Star’ 3rd Wave – Ploesti98th. Bomb Sp 343rd. Sqdu. Astro Romano Refinery Aug. 1, 1943”, Ed Rothkrug “Lt Ed Rothkrug Navigator ‘Northern Star’” and Robert Judy “Sgt. Robert Judy Bombardier ‘Northern Star’ Ploestri Aug. 1 1943 98 Bomb Group 343 Bomb Sqdn.”
