Three Civil War Pro-Union Cartes de Visites: Eagle, Peace, and Liberty
Three patriotic cartes-de-visite from the Civil War, all measuring approximately 2.5" x 4", dated ca. 1864-5. All are pro-Union, including the war eagle mascot "Old Abe", "PEACE", and Lady Liberty. All have light wear to the edges and corners. Minor toning to all, with some wear and mounting residue on verso. Overall, very good.
1. The New Picture of the Eagle. Depicting a bald eagle perched upon a Union shield. On verso is a caption reading in part: "Album Portrait of 'Old Abe' the Live Eagle which was carried through a three years' campaign, and many battles, by the 8th Wisconsin Regiment…" By Dunlop, Sewell, & Spalding. Sold to benefit the Great Sanitary Fair in Chicago, which opened May 30, 1865.
2. PEACE. A photograph of the painting by George G. Fish, depicting the female personification of Liberty surrounded by her sisters, Agriculture, Industry, and Art. Published by J.P. Soule of Boston. Blank verso.
3. Lady Liberty. The female Liberty is draped in a white robe, wearing a crown and holding the American flag. On verso is a label for "SPECIALITE", Selby & McCauley.
