71st New York State Militia at Navy Yard Washington D.C.
A sepia-toned photograph of several uniform rows of New York State militia in formation. On the left side of the image is a large building with a sloping roof, and paddle steamers can be seen in the background. Measuring 13.75" x 9.5" (sight), [Washington, D.C.], ca. 1861-1865. The image has been formerly attributed to Mathew B. Brady. Matted to the overall size of 24" x 18". Some minor fading and age-toning throughout. Faint creasing and wrinkling. Overall, very good.
The 71st New York was first formed in October 1850, and was called "The American Rifles" and later "The American Guard." When the Civil War broke out in April 1861, 380 men mustered under Colonel Vosburgh at the State Arsenal, in response to President Lincoln's call for 75,000 troops. One week later, the 71st paraded down Broadway and headed to Washington. The militia was temporarily installed at the Washington Navy Yard, but eventually joined the Excelsior Brigade, raised by General Sickles, and mustered in the service of the United States for three years. The men saw action at the First Battle of Bull Run, Chancellorsville, and eventually returned to New York to aid with suppressing the draft riots.
