Description
Two Confederate Watercolors - CSA Flags, 1865 and Post-War
Two watercolor paintings of confederate flags. The first is a framed piece, measuring 2.75" x 3.5" (sight), 3.5" x 4.25" overall, n.p., n.d. The painting is of The Stainless Banner, the first official national flag of the CSA. On verso, the flag is misidentified as "The last flag adopted by the Confederate States of America 1865 A.D." The last flag adopted was a modification of the Stainless Banner - renamed the Blood Stained Banner - which added a vertical red bar to the end so it would not be mistaken as a flag of truce. Very fine.
The second watercolor has been done on the front of a McKinley postcard, measuring 5.5" x 3.25", n.p., n.d. [post-war]. Three Confederate flags have been painted: The Blood Stained Banner, the Confederate Battle Flag, and the "Stars and Bars". In the upper right corner has been written "REL Jan. 19, 1807-1907." The postcard has been left blank on verso. With uneven toning at the corners. Overall very good.
