Lovely Daguerreotype Portrait of a Man in a Top Hat with Hand Tinted Details
Sixth plate, undated portrait of a man elegantly dressed in a three piece suit and top hat, wrapped in a wool blanket. Light rose tint added to subject's face and mouth. Housed in a debossed leather wooden case. Minor rubbing present to the photo with expected wear to case, including scratching and bumping. Very good condition- a nice, clean example. 3.25" x 3.75.
The daguerreotype process was developed by Louis Daguerre in 1839. A piece of silver-plated copper was coated in light-sensitive chemicals, which created the photographic image when exposed to light in the camera. The delicate metal would be placed under glass for protection and display. The man in the photo is identified as Benjamin Alden Wooster, born 1823 in Windsor, NY and died 1888 in New Haven, CT.
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
