Influential military treatise by one of Napoleon's marshals used by the Confederate Army as an official manual during the American Civil War. Two inscriptions to front free endpaper read: "Capt. P.B. Johnson A.Q.M. [Assistant Quartermaster] January 14, 1864" and "Presented by Heir December 1874". Captain Johnson was a well-known newspaper correspondent and Republican activist in the states of Washington and Oregon, becoming editor and (soon thereafter) sole owner of the Walla Walla Union, at some point working for the Portland Oregonian, and finally giving up his financial interest in the Walla Walla paper in 1890.
