Description

Oval celluloid pocket mirror advertising "New Hotel / Chick Springs, S.C."; 2 3/4"W, 1 3/4"H; good condition---A mineral spring once thought to have healing properties still bubbles at the site of the once-renowned Chick Spring Hotel in Chick Springs, SC. A hotel opened there in 1840 and remained prosperous until the start of the Civil War. In 1862, the hotel burned. After going through several revitalizations and another fire, a new owner rebuilt a larger hotel by 1914. The new hotel failed, and the property was used as a military academy from 1916-1917.
