Description
Hand written by W. H. Brunson to his "Pa"; dated January 24th, 1861, and addressed from "Moultrie House Sullivan's Island"; letter begins "I have just returned from the upper end of the Island where our Company have been stationed the last two days to guard the channels, All the companies in the Regiment take it by turns and stay two days . . . I cannot tell you anything about politics as I have very little time to read the papers. The popular opinion seems to be that war is inevitable. There is one cannon planted at the point we have been guarding (a twelve pounder). We have instructions to hail every vessel that passes and if it does not stop, fire into it with the cannon."; letter discusses other comrades and Capt. Adams; 10"W x 8"H; light toning, creases, stains---A Capt. Cicero Adams and W. H. Brunson from Edgefield County are listed as belonging to South Carolina 14th Infantry Regiment. These are probably the W.H. Brunson who authored this letter and the Capt. Adams who is mentioned in this letter. The Moultrie House was an elegant hotel built in 1850 on the beachfront of Sullivan's Island east of Fort Moultrie. It quickly gained a national reputation as a luxury hotel. However, "the glory days of the Moultrie House came to an abrupt halt in 1861, as Sullivan's Island turned from resort to a Confederate military post. The hotel, now used as housing for Confederate officers, made it a ready target for Union bombardments." The Moultrie House was fired upon by the Union forces during the Fort Sumter bombardment of April 12, 1861.
