South Carolina Confederate Soldier Cabinet Cards, All KIA or DOW
Four albumen cabinet card portraits, most vignetted. Charleston, SC: W.B. Austin. Matted and framed with typed identifications affixed to mat. Photographer’s Vandyke Studio, 310 King St. illustrated imprints to mount versos. Each with a typed biography of the subject affixed to mount versos. The biography of Julius Constantine Seabrook includes a handwritten note.
A poignant grouping of four cabinet card portraits of South Carolina Veterans, all of whom were killed in action or died of wounds sustained in battle. All four men were born on James Island, South Carolina, and enlisted early in the war, all but Hinson enlisting in May 1861 with the Palmetto Guard, Kershaw’s 2nd South Carolina Infantry. A typed biography is affixed to the verso of each portrait detailing their fates: Julius Constantine Seabrook (1841-1862), KIA Fredericksburg. Includes handwritten note: “And how can man die better than facing fearful odds, for the ashes of his fathers and the temple of his God!”; Rawlins H. Rivers (1844-1863), transferred to Tennessee along with Longstreet’s command, DOW Chickamauga, 23 September 1863; James Perounneau Royall (1840-1862), KIA Malvern Hill; Stiles Mellichamp Hinson (1836-1864), enlisted in April 1861 with the Rutledge Mounted Rifleman (later Troop B, 7th South Carolina Cavalry). DOW at Fussel’s Mill near Richmond, 14 August 1864. It is noted that his (near) dying words, “Tell them I died as a Confederate soldier should, doing his duty.” The 2nd Palmetto Regiment was a bloodied and hard-fought regiment seeing most of the major battles of the Eastern Theater.
