Bruce Elliot Roberts (New York, Florida, 1917 - 1993)
Bruce Elliott Roberts was born in May 27, 1917 Montreal and passed away Jan 29th 1993. He lived primarily in Florida and the Virgin Islands. He attended Julliard Institute and won an international poster contest in high school and further studied at the English Institute of Art as a prize for winning the contest.
He was meticulous with his paintings for historical significance.
The sea always has strongly influenced Mr. Roberts. He grew up on the Bayfront of Long Island, New York, where he had his own sailboat before he had a bicycle. After seven years in the U.S. Navy, he and his bride, Deedee, owned and sailed the Chesapeake Bay schooner Delaware for two years on Long Island Sound.
They sold her, moved to Florida for year-round sailing and lived aboard and brought up five children aboard the 43’ gaff-rigged ketch Calypso Queen. Based mainly in Miami, they sailed and cruised the Florida Keys, the Bahamas and the Virgin Islands. Mr. Roberts’ paintings convey his respect for the men who brave the sea, and, to quote one reviewer, “are done with the muscle and dash of a Montague Dawson…full of sunlight, clouds and billowing sails.”
