Description
Frederick Carder (1863-1963) of Steuben Glass Works - Steuben Gold Aurene Glass Vase, ca. 1904 to 1925. Inscribed "aurene 2687" on the underside of base. A stunning Steuben Aurene Glass bowl of an elegant form with rounded shoulders as well as beautiful golden hues with iridescence of fuchsia, aqua, and violet shimmer. Aurene Glass was developed by Frederick Carder (1863-1963) for Steuben Glass Works, one of the most respected American glass makers of the 20th century. A contemporary of Tiffany, Steuben Glass was located in Corning, New York which is in Steuben County, hence the name. This vessel showcases Carder's brilliant union of luminous hues with his Art Nouveau design - a classic form with graceful lines! Size: 5.7" in diameter x 3.2" H (14.5 cm x 8.1 cm)
During the summer of 1903, Steuben Glass Works was founded by Thomas G. Hawkes and Frederick Carder in Steuben County, New York. Carder became known for his innovative exploration of various colors and glass treatments. Gold Aurene glass was among his coveted styles and led the company to thrive. However, World War I made it difficult to access important glassmaking materials, and Steuben found itself having to halt production. Given this, Hawkes sold the company to Corning Glass Works in 1918; however, Carder remained and the new Steuben division continued to produce colorful art glass. Interestingly, Tiffany Studios took Carder to court in hopes that they would be able to stop their competitor from creating works that competed with their Favrile glass. This attempt, however, was unsuccessful, because Carder had patented his technique.
