Item Details
Description
North Africa, Morocco, Tamegroute (Tamgrout), Berber culture, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A bi colored glazed shallow ceramic dish that has been mounted in an openwork brass frame. The plate has a ring form foot and the thick walls flare outward with an almost flat basin. The plate is glazed by half dipping, with an olive green and ivory white - the basin is split exactly in half, a solid covering of each color on both sides. The brass embellishments are secured to the rim, with twisted wires creating a scalloped edge, and the other pieces rest flush on the basin's surface, in curvilinear and circular forms. A separate brass sheet covers the exterior of the ring foot, which is pierced for suspension. The green results from the copper and magnesium in the clay and glaze, a special recipe that has been used by Berber artisans for generations and has yet to be perfectly replicated outside of Tamegroute. Size: 9.5" Diameter x 1.25" H (24.1 cm x 3.2 cm)

Provenance: ex-Ashland University Museum, Ashland, Ohio, USA, donated to Ashland University between July 1994 to December 1998
