Title: USA and important Texas map with Mexico. 1839 by Mitchell

Date/Period: 1846

Dimension: 11 1/2 x 17 1/2"

Material: Hand colored engraved

Additional Information: The map is dated 1839, Texas joins the union in 1845 and this map comes a publication from 1946. It’s shows the largest extent of the republic of Texas, with a small section extending all the way to the 42nd parallel. Austin is it’s capital. Interesting captions on Texas include areas of ‘herds of Buffaloes and wild horse’. Parts of the ‘great American desert’, ‘extensive prairies’. The ‘mustang desert’, near the mouth of the Rio Grande. Among the notable cities are Houston, Galveston, Victoria, and shows Santa Fe within Texas boundaries. Interesting boundaries for the Wisconsin territories. Iowa territory shows Winnebagos and Sioux tribes. Missouri territory shows the lands of the black feet Indians among others, what’s called ‘Indian territory’ in the middle, has many native American tribes such as Cherokee, Choctaw, Osages, Pawnees and others. Oregon territory extends above the 49th parallel. A large insert shows Mexico and upper California (who’s status is ambiguous) as it was not officially entered until 1850 and administered by the army since 1848 all before this map, with the Apache’s in the boundary between the two. Below Mexico the Central American republic is labeled as Guatemala with the now existing countries shown in small letters. A very interesting and important map. Some center fold separation on the lower area, has been taped.
